INFORMATION

The first ever STRATA GANZA comes to NYC for one week – October 3rd-4th-5th-6th at the Pratt Institute, Department of Digital Arts in Brooklyn.

Eight of the top Strata Cut Innovators bring their blades from around the world. They join forces for a chance to ‘Think Strata.’ This group will describe, share, make, show, and cut in eight different and distinct ways during this ‘shape over time teach-in spectacular.’

Each day will take place on the 4th floor of the DDA at Myrtle Hall. Sessions will be in the Gallery, Hall, and Stop Motion Studio rooms. Students and ticketed public will participate and see how shape-programmed clay works before we also help them to make their own first ‘time-sculptures’.

5 Artists will be sharing and teaching in person throughout the week.

2 will present strata presentations/discussions by Zoom call

2 will watch the final night showing of all the work – along with all of us. Steffie Yee and Jordi Tager will bring fresh reactions to the week of everyones work.

The ‘Ganza’ will include;

1-The power of vivid electric textures of Ellard DeVane

2-Strata Cut latte and video game sprites/gifs of Mason Lindroth

3-The smooth-cutting graphic design of Taylor J Wells / Strata guillotine

4-The stop-mo/strata teacher and shape-over-time artist Toni Alarco.

@SteffieYee could not attend, but will watch with us, the last class of the Ganza, showing all its work at the end of a busy creative week. Jordan Tager @jordi_up_late also was slated for Tuesday, but has to rain check this one.

@SteffieYee could not attend, but will watch with us, the last class of the Ganza, showing all its work at the end of a busy creative week.

Each artist brings a unique clay slice story – different insights into seeing world lines and motion flow outcomes – different program approaches for clay layers, twists, dynamic angles, and geometry distortions.

The Ganza will also include David Daniels – @strata_cut / stratacut.com (insanimator)

‘DD’ has taught how to program and cut strata over four decades: at festivals, art schools, stop motion studios, and classroom workshops all across the world.

Friday, he will also be showing prototype methods for shooting multi-cams and spindle cams of each cut being sliced from more than one angle, to reconstruct them as a simulation later. These multi-stream captures are for future use in AI Neural Radiance Field NERF reconstructions – (with Gaussian Splatter) a high speed vividly real method to store and replay the block of structural mass conveyed in post-VR spatial cinema.  He hopes to have a working demo of this Strata Cut and Stop-Motion future!  (Could happen … )

The Ganza is four days long. Each day has four periods. Each teaching block is @ two hours long.  The periods begin at 9.30, and end by 7 each day – during the week of Oct 3,4,5,6.

A streaming list for those who cannot attend – will be updated during the show at stratacut.com/strataganza under the “Streaming” section. Each of us will take turns streaming bits and sections as we can during these hours and days.

Each day – there will be 3 periods of hands-on instruction for Students at Pratt Institute of the Arts. Lunch will be discussions and media sharing on Strata Topics. Each of these sessions will also be open to the wider public – based on room capacity. Public sign-ups on Eventbrite.

LOCATION

Pratt Institute of the Arts Street address is — 200 Willoughby Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205. We will meet in Myrtle Hall, 4th floor.

FINAL THOUGHTS

So bring your slicing methods and your sculpting tools. Bring any plasticine clay you may already possess.  For each session except lunch – a pound of free clay is given to any who attend, so they can begin to practice the craft.

Thanks to Van Aken International for donating much of the clay students and the public will use.  Thanks to Pratt for allowing you the public to participate (beyond first-priority students.) Please help this project happen! And help fund the collection and sharing of video material lessons and video recordings taken during the event.  This takes a lot of organization and time to sort and re-distribute, so a copy of the teach-in has the ability to be shared far beyond the week itself —    https://gofund.me/c63a9b59
